Day ThreeOur day started at 9:30am with Gillian leading us on a very interesting walking tour of the Mayfair neighborhood. We saw little secret hide-aways and heard interesting historic tidbits. Then Gillian took us over to watch the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. While we try to not be your "typical American tourist" sometimes what we really want to see is the "typical" tourist attraction like the changing of the guard. Once again, having a guide with us was so helpful, because things were happening in a different way due to construction for the Olympics. Gillian knew exactly where we should stand to get the best experience!
We then strolled down to the Churchill War Rooms. While Gillian didn't guide us through the museum, she did give us all kinds of useful information and then set us off to explore the history on our own. The museum provided audio guides, so we followed from room to room, learning all about what went on in these bunkers during WWII. I find it so amazing that when my daughter learns about WWII in school, she will have so much first hand knowledge. Rebecca was relieved when we finished at the War Rooms, as she was ready for food! Gillian had given us several suggestions for lunch spots. We found delicious sandwiches at Pickles, a small restaurant nearby. The group then walked to Trafalgar Square, passing Downing Street and the horse guards on the way. Gillian's tour at the National Gallery, was one of the best art tours we have taken. She was excellent at telling us what to look for in each painting. We felt like royalty having our own Blue Badge Guide. The rest of the afternoon and evening were all on our own. We decided to see what show tickets we could get for that night. On the top of Rebecca's wish list was to see Mama Mia! So it seemed like fate that there were tickets available. We ate dinner near Leicester Square at a cute little crepe place and then strolled over to the theatre. The show was really fantastic and we all enjoyed it. After the show, we made our way back to the hotel. We were thrilled to kick off our shoes, relax and catch up on our travel journals. |
FAVORITE PHOTOSI couldn't resist capturing some of the interesting signs around London.
