Welcome to London! While we were thrilled to be in London, navigating the Heathrow airport is another story. Maybe the jet-lag makes it all seem more complicated? After walking what seemed like miles (or kilometers, as we are in Great Britain) we were thrilled to find the cabs and make our way into London. While, yes, there are cheaper, faster ways to get to London, is there anything better than taking a black London taxi cab? I think not.
We arrived at our hotel (The Washington Mayfair) dropped our luggage, and headed out to explore. While having lunch at a little coffee shop across from the hotel, we studied our map, and realized that Buckingham Palace was very close. Perhaps the Queen would invite us in for tea? Sadly, the Queen was not home, which we could tell from the Union Jack flag flying above the Palace. If she were home the Royal Standard flag would be flying. . We were typical tourists and took tons of photos of the Palace. It was so fun to see in person after watching the Jubilee concert that had taken place in that exact spot just days ago! We then made our way on foot to Oxford Street. The teenager in the group wanted to shop and find some London fashions. Rick always says doing something active helps with the jet-lag. So, we were very active as we walked many blocks and window shopped, and found a few small souvenirs. As the sleep deprivation set in, we made our way back to our hotel, picking up dinner at a grocery store on the way. We always try to arrive one day before the tour. It gives us a chance to get over the jet lag, get a feeling of the neighborhood, and to allow extra time just in case of any transportation delays! |
Planning Your Own Trip?Rick Steves' London 2012 Guide book was my first resource for travel information. Once I have read what Rick suggests, then I would research on the internet. On each page I've included some of the websites that I found helpful in planning the day. Just click on the name of the place!
